Minor in Arts and Health

The Arts and Health Minor offers students an immersive exploration of the intersection between the arts, health, and well-being, drawing from the national arts and health movement. This program provides a comprehensive foundation through core courses that cover cultural, neuroscience, social science, and applied perspectives, equipping students with a broad understanding of the field. Designed to support artists, community leaders, and emerging professionals, the minor emphasizes foundational skills in research, program development, community engagement, and entrepreneurship. Students engage with real-world applications in community-based settings and explore professional opportunities in the local, national, and global arts and health landscape. These experiences empower them to contribute meaningfully to the expanding role of the arts in health and well-being.

Entrance Requirements

None; this minor is open to all B.A, B.M. and P.D.M. students. Submit the Declaration of Major/Minor form to the Music Therapy Department. See detailed instructions in the Registration Guide

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will:

  • examine the scientific and cultural underpinnings for the use of arts-based experiences to impact health outcomes
  • explore trends in practice and underlying ethical frameworks that are part of the professional toolkit of artists who use arts-based experiences to promote public health outcomes
  • demonstrate beginning skills sets in arts-based research engagement for program/product development; and
  • articulate the value of multidisciplinary collaboration for arts-based health promotion.
