Mark Harlan is an acoustics consultant involved in a variety of architectural design and construction projects, leading the acoustical design efforts for fine arts and performance spaces and other multi-use commercial, education, and civic facilities. Harlan has consulted on projects addressing all important aspects of acoustical design, including room acoustics, sound isolation, auditorium and rehearsal acoustics, recording studio acoustics, classroom and lecture hall acoustics, and acoustic simulation. In addition to his consulting work, Harlan has been a professional musician working in and around Austin and Houston, Texas, and New Haven, Connecticut. Prior to his career in consulting, Harlan was the cofounder of a small music and media publishing business in Austin, Texas. He now works as a full-time acoustician and teaches a course titled Musical Acoustics, a survey of the physical phenomena related to sound and music, at Berklee College of Music.

In consulting and teaching, I deeply enjoy the ability to straddle the technical, quantitative science and engineering aspects of acoustics, as well as the more qualitative and creative aspects of understanding sound subjectively, and communicating that to folks from a wide array of backgrounds.
