Claire Marie Lim is a music technologist and electronic musician, active under her artist project dolltr!ck. She specializes in instruction for electronic performance, production and programming under her educational moniker the smol prof, and is an advocate of women and Asian representation in music technology. She is an Ableton Certified Trainer, a Bitwig Certified Trainer, and an Apple Certified Pro, and consults for artists from Universal Music Group, Spinnin’ Records, Monstercat, Liquicity, and more. A wearer of many hats, Lim has been a producer, songwriter, performance designer, audio engineer, playback technician, synthesist, and more throughout her career, and has worked on the teams of Grammy-winning and Billboard-charting artists, such as Alphabet Rockers, Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Wang Leehom, Nona Hendryx (Labelle), My Brightest Diamond, lullaboy (a.k.a. Bernard Dinata), and Agnez Mo, among others.

As dolltr!ck, Lim is known for her live electronic performances incorporating dreamy synths, punchy drum machines, and processed vocals, tied together by dynamic controllerism. Her endeavors have been hailed as “shattering the glass ceiling of electronic music,” gaining recognition from the likes of Spotify, iHeartRadio, Broadway World, Sofar Sounds, and the Recording Academy. Having worked with organizations such as Splice, the International Center of Photography, and Coursera to bring music technology education to various ages and experience levels, Lim continues to collaborate with initiatives such as We Make Noise (formerly Beats By Girlz), FEMME HOUSE, Boston Raising Powerful Musicians (formerly Girls Rock Campaign), and the New York Public Library network to share music-making tools with the community.

In Their Own Words

As an active artist, especially one who identifies as a woman and a minority, I aim to show my students that strength and flexibility can coexist in the professional world. I have faced numerous situations where others have tried to steer me away from my creative path, but I have consistently chosen to remain true to my valuesnot just as a musician, producer, or performer, but as a person. This commitment has led me to not only a rewarding career but also a fulfilling life, and so, through the lens of creative technology, I strive to guide my students in finding the right balance between adapting to real-world demands and staying true to their artistic vision.

Live performance is where I thrive, regardless of whether I am onstage or behind the scenes. As a seasoned performer with experience spanning classical repertoire, musical theater, dance, K-pop, and live electronic music, my journey has profoundly influenced my approach to live performance design for the artists and clients that I collaborate with. I strive to bring the insights from my professional career into the classroom, as a lifelong learner from the “school of hard knocks.” My goal is to equip folks in my classes with the practical knowledge that will enrich not only their college experience, but also their future careers. I want my students’ education to be holistic, extending beyond mere content mastery.
