Eugene Gearty
Eugene Gearty '82 is an Oscar and Emmy-winning film sound designer and editor (Hugo, Boardwalk Empire) whose lengthy list of credits include Life of Pi, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Do The Right Thing, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and the Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy. Gearty won the Academy Award for best achievement in sound editing on Martin Scorcese's 2011 film Hugo, also collaborating with fellow Berklee alumnus and composer Howard Shore '69.
Shortly after graduating Berklee, Gearty became one of the first digital sound editor/designers in the film industry, pioneering the use of the ACCESS and the Synclavier systems in creating sound effects for movies such as Silence of the Lambs, Do the Right Thing, Men in Black, and The Hudsucker Proxy.
"The influences the school had on the creative process—everything was about creativity," Gearty says. "So the fact that I didn't pursue a musical career with my instrument was to me less important than pursuing a sound career in film based on creativity, and that definitely is linked directly to Berklee and the people I met and the teachers I had here."
