Double Majors

Students at Berklee College of Music can declare any two majors except for the combination of music production and engineering and independent recording and production. Double majors are a great choice for students who have clear academic and career goals and require the combination of multiple disciplines to achieve those goals. Because double majors take most students more than four years to complete, planning ahead is crucial for success. A double major declaration should always start with a conversation with your student success advisor who can help you plan your course of study.

Please review this important information for students considering a double major:

  • Any two majors can be combined except for music production and engineering/independent recording and production.
  • Students must take all required courses for each major, and double majors take extra time—at least one full semester—to complete. Music therapy and music education combinations take even more time. Planning ahead is very important. Please review this page (for current Berklee students) for details on how best to plan your course of study, and review the major grid for each major to understand your requirements.
  • Double major requirements include all courses for each major, minus general elective requirements, except for double majors with shared curriculum (see table below). General electives are not required for double majors. If two majors share any major electives, that major elective will fulfill the requirement for both majors. Likewise, if a required course in one major fulfills any requirements (including major electives) in the other major, that course will fulfill both requirements.
  • Students in double major combinations that require specific core music and liberal arts and sciences courses must take those specified courses to fulfill that part of their requirements (e.g., double majors with composition must take the MHIS-251 and MHIS-252 music history sequence).
  • Certain combinations with music education and music therapy (music business/management, electronic production and design, and game and interactive media scoring) will result in a higher total liberal arts credits required.
