MTEC-111 Introduction to Music Technology: Online Test-Out
The Part 7: Music Technology exam offers students the opportunity to get credit by exam (CBX) for the music technology requirement for all degree and diploma students, provided that they demonstrate strong knowledge of the subject matter.
If you successfully test out of the music technology requirement, you will earn credit by exam for either MTEC-111 Introduction to Music Technology or MTEC-122 Music Technology Accelerated. Then you may be placed in another 2-credit course that fits your schedule, such as: MB-101 Introduction to Music Business, MP-110 Introduction to Music Production and Engineering, MP-113 Accelerated Pro Tools, MTEC-213 Producing Music with Ableton Live, or MTEC-214 Producing Music with Logic Pro. If you do not test out, you will be placed in a section of MTEC-111 Introduction to Music Technology or MTEC-122 Music Technology Accelerated, depending on your score.
The test-out is a required part of the entering student assessment.
- There are 50 multiple-choice questions to attempt within 50 minutes. You must get 40 correct answers to pass the exam.
- If you fail the exam, you must take either MTEC-111 or MTEC-122 in order to graduate, no matter how well you did on the test or how close you came to passing. There is no next level of Music Technology.
- Note that the link will be open during the designated time period that the entering student assessment is open and is for new students only.
- The registrar will award CBX to students who have successfully passed this test-out and you will be added to a new course that fits your schedule. If you wish to change that course, please contact the Electronic Production and Design department for MTEC-213 and MTEC-214, the Music Production & Engineering department for MP-110 and MP-113, and/or the Music Business department for MB-101.
- We do not provide any study guide or material for this test as we expect students to pass the test only if they are already familiar with music technology and have retained the knowledge required to achieve a passing score. Students without the required knowledge should be taking either MTEC-111 or MTEC-122 instead of cramming for the test.
- The test can only be attempted once. No exceptions; therefore, please set aside the time all to yourself to attempt the test without interruptions and be sure to have a secure connection when taking the test.
- If you have any questions, please email the Electronic Production and Design Department Coordinator at elpd@berklee.edu.
