David Thibodeau was born and raised in Connecticut. He began his career in the music industry at the age of 13, when he started playing as a freelance musician in night clubs. In 1976, he joined the US Army and was trained as an electronics technician. Upon discharge in 1979, he took a job as a bench technician at a local hi-fi audio repair shop as well as a job as an assistant engineer in a 24-track facility. He moved to Nashville in 1981 and joined a country/pop group and toured across the country.

In 1982, he enrolled at Middle Tennessee State University and earned a BS in computer science. He became the chief engineer for the MTSU recording studio. In 1987, he developed and taught the Recording Studio Maintenance course at MTSU.

He joined Professional Audio Design in 1998 and was the VP of technical operations. There, he installed/refurbished/modified a large number of recording consoles. In 2005, he partnered with Geoff Daking to design pro audio equipment, including a recording console, several compressors, and microphone preamps. He has done freelance broadcast audio work for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

In 2012, he began teaching at Berklee. He also took a full-time position with Analog Devices as an applications engineer supporting audio converters and DSPs.

In 2024, he created the YouTube channel How To SigmaDSP and SigmaStudio.

I have a varied background of performing and recording, installations, and modifications and repairs of recording studios. I have designed a lot of pro audio equipment and programming of microcontrollers and DSPs. This allows me to understand the entire environment around a recording studio.
