James (Jim) O'Dell has been professionally active in instrumental music and music education since
1979. He holds advanced degrees in tuba, euphonium, and bass trombone performance. A distinguished and versatile educator, conductor, and musician, he recently retired as associate dean for academic affairs at Boston Conservatory at Berklee after serving 26 years, including twice as dean and chief academic officer ad interim, and director of the Conservatory Music Division. Professor O'Dell is currently the music director and conductor of the Concord Band and served as associate conductor of MetWinds from 2002-2022. Previous teaching positions include lecturing professor at MIT directing the Festival Jazz Ensemble, director of bands at Boston University, Mansfield University (PA), and Phoenix College (AZ). From 1978-1981 he served as director of bands and elementary music teacher in southern Oregon. He is founder of the New England Collegiate Jazz Festival, Boston Tuba Christmas, and cofounder of the Boston Tuba Quartet and the Brass Consortium.
