Ask Norm! Inside and outside techniques guitarists should know for all styles made (relatively) easy for improvisation and composition.

In addition to Norm’s usual diet of polytonal techniques, diminished and augmented scales, improv with the cycle of 5ths/4ths, the mother chord, and the devil’s triangle, participants can select from the following menu and more:

  • The authentic blues turnaround, how to play it, and it’s the original version of rhythm changes;
  • Harmonizing major and minor scales in the melody only using I, IV, and V chords in the popular and classical styles;
  • Voice leading all seven notes of scales/chords like guide tones on a II V I;
  • I IV-6 Iº7 I7 as the root of those blue monk chromatic country/blues 3rds and 6ths, yet, it’s a Mozart lick;
  • Diminished triad—the classical voice leading hack and its key role in blues;
  • How to play totally chromatic, yet, sound totally normal;
  • III VI II V I circularity;
  • Major and minor blues scale drifter positions and how they are used in country, rock, and blues;
  • Ornamenting CAGED positions for rock and country soloing;
  • Comping changes a la Jimi.

As always, PDFs of examples will be provided
