The New York Times compares David “Doc” Wallace’s solo improvisations to “Jimmy Page fronting Led Zeppelin.” Whether playing electric violin at heavy metal shows, Texas-style fiddling with The Doc Wallace Trio, or contemporary classical compositions with Hat Trick (his flute-viola-harp trio), Wallace is at home in front of an audience. Around the globe, musicians have widely adopted his ground-breaking approaches to audience engagement and interactive performance.

Wallace’s broadcast credits include NPR, PBS, KTV (Korea), Tokyo MX, WQXR, CBS, and ABC. He has recorded for Bridge Records, BIS, Innova, Tzadik, Resonance Records, and Mulatta Records. An award-winning composer, Wallace has been commissioned to create original compositions and arrangements for the New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall, the Marian Anderson String Quartet, and violinist Rachel Barton Pine.

As a teaching artist, Wallace has worked for dozens of arts organizations, including Carnegie Hall, Young Audiences, Lincoln Center Education, and big five orchestras. His Berklee Press book, Engaging the Concert Audience: A Musician’s Guide to Interactive Performance, has been deemed “a must-read for all musicians, classical or otherwise” by Symphony magazine.

A Hermitage Fellow and Chair of Berklee College of Music’s String Department since 2014, Wallace previously enjoyed a 14-year tenure as a Juilliard professor and 17 years as a New York Philharmonic Teaching Artist.

In Their Own Words

"Part of my job is to make sure that students have not only the freedom to pursue their creative dreams, but also the structure for becoming technically and musically grounded. In addition to emphasizing healthy, ergonomic approaches to our instruments, I teach how music theory applies to arranging, improvisation, and composition. You will arrange. You will compose. You will improvise!"

"I've been teaching private lessons since 1987 and performing publicly since 1982. My experience with learning, performing, and teaching many genres helps me to meet students where they are and assist them in achieving their own goals."

"What makes the String Department unique? Our doors are wide open, and our entire faculty supports each student’s education. You can graduate having studied with most of our faculty, either privately or in labs and ensembles. At many institutions, you get only one primary teacher. That can be limiting; it can stunt your growth."

"Berklee and its String Department are built on fostering creativity and independent thought. We develop your analytical ability that is so linked to your ears and fingers. We give you a solid grounding in traditional musical languages, as well as contemporary ones. And Berklee is a very supportive community! We're all about the joy of music-making and celebrating musical individuality."
