Alex Lacamoire
Alex Lacamoire graduated in 1995 from Berklee, where he majored in professional music. His orchestration work has earned him Tony Awards for In the Heights (2008), Hamilton (2016), and Dear Evan Hansen (2017).
Although Lacamoire doesn’t describe himself as a “show guy,” he always had a fondness for theater music. He started learning classical piano at the age of 4 and played in his first musical—a summer production of Bye Bye Birdie—at the age of 11. At Berklee, he played jazz and rock as well as studied arranging and film scoring, retaining a strong Latin influence from his roots growing up in Miami's Cuban-American community.
After graduation, Lacamoire became first the associate conductor then the musical director for the hit musical Wicked and later the musical director and orchestrator for In the Heights, where his diverse musical background helped him make creator/star/songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda's hip-hop manifestations work for an orchestra.
In addition to his Tony Awards, Lacamoire won a Grammy as producer for the In the Heights Broadway cast album. In 2010, he was nominated for a Grammy as producer for the 9 to 5: The Musical Broadway cast album. In 2018, he received another Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album with the Dear Evan Hansen cast album.
Lacamoire has also worked on off-Broadway and Broadway productions such as Bring It On: The Musical, Annie, and many more.
