David Alexander Rovang (“Xander”) is a NYC-based music director, pianist, and vocal coach. A native Nebraskan and lifelong fan of A Prairie Home Companion, Xander’s twisted path to Berklee began as an aspiring competition pianist teaching swing and tango in NoHo to make rent for the one-bedroom apartment that definitely wasn’t meant for four grown people. After a chance encounter with a soprano he knew at Oberlin, he realized that he actually hated competing and loved playing with singers, so he decided to ditch dance and the chilly embrace of the solo piano world to bury himself in opera for several years. Multiple Italian divas, an off-Broadway political satire, and a few unforgettable shows with a modern dance company later, Xander was playing auditions for Lincoln Center’s production of Camelot when the casting company decided his tattoos were cool enough to also play auditions for Broadway’s Spring Awakening. Thus his foray into the wild world of music theatre began, taking him around the world several times and allowing him to substantially fatten his apparently cool tattoo fund. More to come…
