Advanced Techniques for the Electronic Music Producer

Course Number
EP-382
Description

This course explores creative sound design and production techniques to help students develop their unique voices as electronic music producers and composers. Building on skills from the EPD core, the course emphasizes creative workflows that bring all elements of a track together with the goal of producing professional, industry-ready music.

The course is taught in Ableton Live with extensive use of software synthesizers. However, the concepts and techniques are transferable, and encouraged, to be utilized in any DAW, software, or hardware platform.

The semester focuses on three areas of study. These include designing expressive and musical synthesizer patches, learning to create drum sounds that fit seamlessly into a track from the start, and advanced processing techniques, including reverb management, vocoding, resampling, and creative sound manipulation.

In addition to hands-on production, students will analyze tracks across multiple genres, applying these techniques to both expand on existing styles and push into new sonic territory.
