A. Visit our application page and log in with your OnePass account to view the requirements. Our institute classes are open to all Berklee students who have completed at least one (1) semester. Our application opens up around registration week for the following semester. To apply, you will be asked to prepare three videos of your playing, one medium/up tempo swing, one odd meter (straight-8th or Afro-Cuban), and one piece of your choice.
Q. During what semesters does the institute hold classes?
A. Our institute only holds classes during the fall and spring semesters.
Q. Can I apply if I’m a vocalist?
A. Absolutely! Please be aware that we have a strong emphasis on jazz musicianship, so vocalists will be expected to read, improvise, and interact with the rest of the ensemble much like a horn player would, as opposed to the ensemble being built around the vocalist.
Q. If I’m graduating, can I still apply to be in the institute?
A. To apply for the institute, you have to be enrolled for the semester that you’re applying for.
Q. Is the institute only for women-identifying musicians?
A. All gender identities and expressions have a place in the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice.
Q. Can I still participate in the institute if I'm not placed in an ensemble?
A. Yes. Our ensembles fill up quickly, but interested students can still attend our weekly Gatherings on Mondays from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, and/or take our liberal arts courses taught by Aja Burrell Wood (LMAS-223 and MHIS-341). Participation in these events will be taken in consideration when deciding on ensemble placement in future semesters.
Q. How do I register for JGJ?
Registration for ensembles is done through the institute. You will be notified directly from Kris Davis if you have been placed in an ensemble. We ask that all students planning to join the institute make 1 credit available for an ensemble and also keep Monday night free for the Gathering, a weekly meeting for institute students with guest artists, discussions, and performances.
