Introduction to Scoring Technology for Media Composers

Course Number
SCRN-202
Description

Taken concurrently with SCRN-240, this introduction to scoring within a digital audio workstation (DAW) highlights the ways in which media composers not only write but also produce their work digitally. Students focus on the (MIDI) keyboard as a compositional and musical input device, which emphasizes the importance of musicality and performance practice as a composer. This course begins with the basics of realizing scores intended to mimic orchestral instruments using virtual instruments and moves through the underpinnings of textural scoring, including an introduction to non-orchestral composition tools such as synthesis, sound libraries, and electronic-based instruments. Scoring to a variety of visual media is presented in tandem with orchestration and synthesis topics. Students will compose to both linear and interactive properties highlighting the similarities and differences in providing musical cues to the various types of projects they may encounter as working composers. Composers will learn common and expected workflows that involve moving between their notation and DAW applications.
