Bookwriting for Musical Theater 1

Course Number
CMWT-550
Description

This course prepares students to create the first draft of their Culminating Experience musical libretto. Drawing on the foundational elements of traditional story structure, students will examine the tropes associated with the classic "hero's journey" of Western literature and the key components of Aristotle's Poetics. Students will also familiarize themselves with the principle elements of the seven basic plots while learning to construct active, nuanced characters. By scrutinizing examples from the musical theater canon and the American theater as a whole, students will recognize parallels between the examples from the canon and the work they are actively creating.
