This course introduces students to ensemble performance through the musical traditions of Africa and the Middle East. The course explores rhythmic cycles, tonal systems, and call-and-response structures found across West African, North African, Arabic, and Mediterranean contexts. Through guided listening, performance, and cultural study, students will learn to interpret and perform repertoire that emphasizes polyrhythm, groove, and cross-cultural collaboration. The ensemble fosters inclusive musicianship by focusing on authenticity, respect for tradition, and intercultural ensemble communication.
