Jazz and Gender Justice Mentorship and Outreach with Boston Arts Academy
This course offers intermediate and advanced JGJ students the opportunity to begin learning or to deepen their teaching and mentorship skills by working directly with high school musicians from the Boston Arts Academy (BAA). Through hands-on experience, students will learn how to communicate effectively and supportively with younger players, develop inclusive teaching practices, and create an engaging curriculum tailored to beginning improvisers.
Course topics include strategies for teaching improvisation over basic forms, developing inclusive repertoire with an emphasis on women composers, and examining the erasure of women in jazz. Students will also explore how to break down musical concepts into clear, manageable steps for beginners, teach in both group and one-on-one settings, and foster an encouraging, equity-focused learning environment.
