Acting 1 for Contemporary Musical Theater

Course Number
PSVC-251
Description

This course provides an introduction to acting training for students seeking to explore contemporary musical theater as singers/actors. Students will develop skills in basic acting technique; an integration of singing and acting technique; an understanding of the integration of textual and musical analysis; skills in movement and improvisation; and a knowledge of professional theatrical rehearsal, audition, and performance protocols and practices. They will study the socio-historical background of assigned repertoire and learn to leverage that knowledge to inform their acting and singing decisions.

Repertoire in the class will reflect the evolution of musical theater from the late 20th century to the present.

This course provides students with a level of acting-specific training to ensure readiness for the advanced acting demands of courses required in the Minor in Musical Theater Performance.
