Introduction to Latin Styles for Vocalists

This introductory performance-based course is designed to prepare vocalists for solo performance in some of the most representative Latin music styles of the 20th and 21st centuries, coming from Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, among others. Students will focus on interacting with the style-appropriate rhythm section and will develop interpretation and vocal strategies necessary for performance in such styles. Topics covered will include historical context and introduction to different styles; selection of appropriate keys and tempos; vocal phrasing, tone color, and diction; work on a variety of grooves and rhythms; storytelling; and stage presence/audience engagement skills.

Building on skills acquired in ENVC-110 Introduction to Ensembles for the Vocalist or ENVC-111 Rhythm Section Grooves for Vocalists 1, students will write basic lead sheets and/or chord charts for use in class.
