Experimental Improvisation Ensemble

Course Number
ENJZ-130
Description

During the Experimental Improvisation Ensemble, students can improvise together and experience what it’s like to be free on their instruments. The focus will be on "beyond idiom" ideas about contingency and chance. Students explore collective improvisation, extended techniques, aleatoric music, and unconventional harmonies, emphasizing texture, timbre, and sonic exploration. Lastly, they delve into free improvisation with structures such as graphic scores, verbal instructions, or other forms of guidance. Exploring undiscovered realms of sound is beneficial for musicians from all backgrounds, interests, instruments, and styles. Becoming more accustomed to experimental improvisation will lead to greater creativity and innovation, resulting in "freedom within form."
