Body Mapping for Pianists

Course Number
PSPN-220
Description

This course will provide Berklee piano principals an opportunity to learn how playing the piano is a full-body activity. Using the concept of body mapping, students will learn recognize that they have a gut-level sense of their structure (their body map) and that inaccuracies in this map prevents achievement of the freedom and ease of motion that they desire. Through the use of videos, models and movement explorations, students will develop an embodied sense of their structure in movement. Modest yet active exercises will help develop a sense of core support, shoulder stabilization, balance and structural continuity. The embodied understanding that is developed through these modalities will be applied elements of music: scales, arpeggios, chords; as well as well a performance of music in a variety of styles.
