Multichannel Audio Techniques for Composition and Installation

Course Number
EP-290
Description

In this course students will approach music composition and production from a spatial perspective. Students will learn to understand what active engagement with space can offer in a musical approach to sound design, composition, and production, and thereby will come to think of spatialization not only through the left and right channels, but also through the front, back, and in surround. Throughout the semester, students will engage with and compose works for various multichannel setups (from stereo, Quad, and up to 10-channels) to understand and experience the way sound and effects function within a multichannel environment. In addition to the technical aspects of the course, this class will consider and discuss listening and space as they appear in the social and cultural spheres. Course discussions will be accompanied by various key texts from the field of sound studies.
