Description

This course provides an in-depth study of intellectual property law as it applies to the music industry, with an emphasis on copyright, trademarks, and the right of publicity. Building on the foundations introduced in MB‑211 Legal Aspects of the Music Business, students will examine how creative works, brands, and personal likeness are protected and monetized. Topics include the scope and limitations of copyright protection, licensing and enforcement, registration and maintenance of trademarks, and legal issues surrounding name, image, and likeness (NIL). Students will also consider emerging challenges posed by digital media, AI, and evolving business models. This course is particularly valuable for students pursuing careers in music publishing, record label operations, artist management, and entertainment law.
