Modular Functions and Signal Flow
This course introduces the foundational principles of modular synthesis and signal flow in electronic music systems. Students will learn how oscillators, filters, amplifiers, and envelope generators interact through voltage control to create and shape sound. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the functional relationships within a synthesizer, translating between block diagrams and modular patches, and developing critical listening skills for identifying control and audio signals. Through hands-on practice using both hardware and software modular environments, students will gain fluency in designing, documenting, and performing with original patches. By the end of the course, students will be able to apply synthesis and programming techniques creatively, evaluate patch quality and organization, and employ voltage control as a musical language across diverse production contexts.
