PODCAST: Inside Berklee—Cathy Young
In her five years as director of Boston Conservatory’s Dance Division, Cathy Young has earned a reputation as an innovator and trailblazer for her role in modernizing the program and preparing students for careers as versatile, entrepreneurial artists.
Young and her colleagues have recently been recognized by OnStage and Backstage magazine as offering one of the best contemporary dance programs in the country. She has also made it her mission to bring more diversity to the program.
On the heels of the merger of Berklee and Boston Conservatory, Young is eager to be a part of the evolving synergy and opportunities for collaboration presented by the united institution. "I feel so lucky to be right here when this is happening," she says. "I think we all have this feeling like kids in a candy shop."
In this episode of Inside Berklee, Young talks about the state of dance as an art form; the importance of taking risks as an artist; how her broad background in liberal arts and dance informs her role; and her excitement about the possibilities the merger has opened up.
