Bassist, composer, and bandleader Greg Loughman has made a name for himself as an “emphatically lyrical” (Scott Albin, JazzTimes), versatile, and sensitive accompanist who plays "with sublime authority" (Raul d’Gama Rose, All About Jazz) and "delivers not only the foundation, but also intriguing, melodic, cleanly stated solos" (Bill Donaldson, Cadence Magazine). Born in Zanesville, Ohio, Loughman earned a Master of Music in global jazz at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he currently lives. He has performed and/or recorded with artists including Danilo Pérez, Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Hal Galper, Mark Murphy, and many others. Since 2014, he has toured extensively with gypsy-jazz group the Rhythm Future Quartet and has made a name for himself in that genre, performing with such artists as Gonzalo Bergara, Stephane Wrembel, and John Jorgenson. In addition, he co-leads the groups Man on Land and Roving Soul, and performs with the John Funkhouser Trio, Klezwoods, the Sonic Explorers, and many others. He is also an in-demand studio musician in the Boston area and teaches private lessons from his home and online. In the fall of 2020, he founded New England Jazz Connections, an organization that empowers jazz musicians to stage concerts that raise funds for worthy causes.
"I'd like students to come away from my classes with a better and more personal understanding of how the music they love is constructed. It is my hope that this level of understanding will then empower them to fully actualize their musical and professional aspirations."
"I've been a full-time working bassist for a number of years, and have played and recorded many different styles. This helps me to translate the concepts I teach into real-world examples, so that they're not just dry examples from a textbook to be memorized for a test then discarded, but rather sounds and concepts that students have likely already encountered. I like to say that I'm just giving name and structure to things the students already know from listening to the music they love."
