Held under the artistic direction of Danilo Pérez, renowned pianist and founder/artistic director of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute (BGJI), this tribute honors the extraordinary life and legacy of legendary drummer Roy Haynes, whose influence continues to shape the evolution of jazz.
The program will feature reflections and musical contributions from Pérez, Terri Lyne Carrington—artist, mentee of Haynes, and founder/artistic director of the Institute for Jazz and Gender Justice—and Leslie K. Haynes, Roy Haynes’s daughter and scholar, each offering insight into the intergenerational influence of his artistry.
Performances by BGJI master’s student ensembles and the BGJI Big Band, directed by Chase Morrin, will celebrate Haynes’s work through dynamic interpretations and collective expression.
The event will also mark the release of BGJI faculty member Patricia Zarate Perez’s new book, Latin American Cultural and Musical Contexts in Music Therapy, which explores the intersection of music, culture, and healing. Presented by the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, this celebration underscores the ongoing resonance of Roy Haynes’s contributions to jazz and his impact across generations of musicians and scholars.
