Joshua Michael Arkangel is a pianist/composer specializing in the creation, performance, and advocacy of new music. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Arkangel started lessons in piano and percussion at the age of 4. In an ongoing quest to perform the music of our time, Arkangel serves as a pianist in Boston Conservatory’s contemporary classical music ensemble, contraBAND. Notable performances include two recitals at Severance Hall in Cleveland, Ohio; the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City; and Carnegie Hall, alongside saxophonist Steven Banks in 2019.

Arkangel is a frequent collaborator and previous artistic director for PRISM, an artistic collective in Cleveland dedicated to uniting music, theater, poetry, visual art, and dance through multimedia performances. As a composer, he enjoys exploring the subtle nuances of sound. Recent commissions include a set of orchestral sketches for the Baldwin Wallace Symphony Orchestra in addition to a new work for the Boston-based duo Transient Canvas. Arkangel completed his undergraduate studies in music composition at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory in Berea, Ohio. He is currently pursuing a master’s in contemporary classical music performance from the Boston Conservatory, under the guidance of Stephen Drury. Past instructors include Clint Needham, Anthony Fuoco, and Mary Dobrea-Grindahl.
