The Alegria Quartet is a musical group formed by Brazilians Ian Coury on mandolin and Gabriel Maia on guitar, and Americans Alex Polydoroff on bass and Julian Pavone on drums. The quartet's idea is to mix cultures and free itself to play music from all over the world, reinterpreting it with fresh arrangements and compositions, and coloring the music with contemporary Brazilian jazz and pop influences. The group's aesthetics were inspired by mandolinist and band leader Coury, who always wanted to explore the mandolin more deeply in other musical styles, experimenting with different roles for the instrument. Alegria means joy, and this is the message that the quartet conveys when presenting its energetic musical repertoire and improvisations.
