Grammy-winning vocalist Luciana Souza B.M. ’88, one of jazz’s leading singers and interpreters, and leading jazz tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano ’72 ’98H lead this forum.
Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Luciana Souza transcends traditional stylistic boundaries. She has been releasing celebrated recordings—including six Grammy-nominated albums—since 2002. Her critically acclaimed new album, The Book of Longing, presents her settings of poems by Emily Dickinson, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Christina Rossetti, and Leonard Cohen. Souza began her recording career at age 3 with a radio commercial. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in jazz composition from Berklee College of Music, Souza earned a master’s degree in jazz studies from the New England Conservatory of Music. She also served as a faculty member at Berklee College of Music and Manhattan School of Music. She has twice been named female jazz singer of the year by the Jazz Journalists Association.

A leading jazz luminary, Joe Lovano is a Grammy-winning saxophonist and Blue Note recording artist who serves as Gary Burton chair in performance with the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. Lovano has collaborated with many legendary musicians, including McCoy Tyner ’05H, Hank Jones ’05H, John Scofield ’73 ’97H, Branford Marsalis ’80 ’06H, and Jim Hall ’95H. He has been nominated for 14 Grammys, and won last year’s DownBeat Critics Poll Award for tenor saxophone.
