Description
This course introduces students to the field of teaching music in a school setting through hip-hop music and culture. It examines the best practices of teaching through experiences with and of hip-hop music/culture, the implementation of culturally relevant pedagogies/culturally responsive teaching through the interrogation of hip-hop culture, as well as the larger discussion of the rich Black American Music (#BAM) tradition. In this course we will also discuss the process of completing the Berklee music education curriculum and the process of becoming a licensed music teacher in the state of Massachusetts. Upon successful completion of this course, students will better understand the music teaching profession, teacher licensing, hip-hop culture and music, how to apply culturally relevant pedagogies in their practice, and how to successfully negotiate and complete the music education curriculum.
