The F Word: Sex & Equity in Songwriting

Course Number
SW-277
Description

This is an immersive course in which students will write songs that authentically reflect their identities and lived experiences. Building on the Songwriting Major's core tools and techniques, students will examine intersectional feminism and analyze how race, class, and gender shape creative expression. Through the study of pioneering female songwriters, from Nina Simone to Chappell Roan; feminist literature, from bell hooks to Roxane Gay; and visual art, poetry, and performance, students will deepen their understanding of self, songwriting, and artistic purpose. The course culminates in the creation of five original songs that tell personal stories and amplify marginalized voices.
