Finding the Singing Artist Within
The successor of a long-running directed study class, this course is an artist incubator for self-accompanying singer/songwriters of any principal instrument, major, or style/genre. The course provides an opportunity for students to focus on artistic development through prompted songwriting assignments, attention to performance technique, development of audience engagement/public speaking skills, and effective communication with collaborators through work with an advanced-level rhythm section.
Students will emerge from the course with a heightened, individual sense of their unique artist selves by engaging with weekly songwriting exercises in reaction to a variety of prompts related to various topics such as personal experiences, social issues, artistic demands; by receiving real-time feedback from the instructor and peers; and by learning to provide feedback to others.
Weekly activities will including journaling and reading/viewing assignments.
Students will write their own lead sheets (using their notation software of choice) and will use their DAW of choice to create sample reference recordings. Students will sing live each week in class with a full rhythm section, and will be challenged to perform with and without their self-accompanying instrument.
