Songwriting for The Contemporary Performer
This course enables students to develop creative songwriting skills, deepen their ability to compose original music, brainstorm new ideas, find inspiration, and cultivate their creative identities. Students will strengthen their skills to create and perform songs in several styles, and organize their creative process and musical material. Throughout the course, students will increase their proficiency at notating clear lead sheets. In a context of project-based, individual, and collaborative creation, students will hone the core concepts essential for effective songwriting, integrating creative strategies and routines. Working under the direction of a faculty member, students will complete exercises that enhance their songwriting and creative organizational skills. They will learn to maintain stylistic integrity by receiving weekly feedback from peers and faculty. In-class performances are a critical part of the course experience, as is participation in a final showcase.
This course is intended for CPPD students, but other graduate students may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
