Music Cognition

Course Number
LSOC-307
Description

Music Cognition is an interdisciplinary scientific field concerned with the study of how humans and our brains process and understand music. This course will consider how the brain represents musical structure and how these representations guide the perception, acquisition, creation, and performance of music. A theme of expectancy will frame our understanding of music processing across the semester. Expectancy, our knowledge of what should come next, is a topic central to the study of music cognition and is foundational to our emotional responses to music. Research findings will be considered from the perspectives of psychology, neuroscience, and music theory.
