Description
This course is an introduction to Latin American history. Case studies will be used to illustrate historical trends, including conquest, colonialism and independence, forced labor and resistance, the rise of US imperialism and nationalist responses, revolution and counterrevolution in the Cold War, the “pink wave” of leftism, and emigration. Particular attention will be paid to the lives of non-elite women and men, and students will explore the roles that ethnicity, race, class, and gender have had in the region’s history. The course draws upon interdisciplinary materials, including primary and secondary historical texts, as well as fiction, film, music, painting, and photography.
