Berklee City Music Teaching Artist Seminar

Course Number
GS-570
Description

Built on years of success in using contemporary popular music as the pivot that transforms lives, the Berklee City Music Teaching Artist Seminar is a four session professional development intensive course designed to expand each participant’s knowledge base and vision for teaching culturally rich roots and contemporary popular music content, as well as pedagogy based in creative youth development. Berklee City Music’s holistic approach in creative youth development is achieved by fully immersing teachers in music making methods to inspire them and their students through an exploration of music’s social and cultural context.

Through this course, teachers develop custom design modules specific to their classroom and learners’ needs. Ongoing engagement within the City Music online learning community also provides continued resources and instructional supports with shared best practices. This intensive professional development course includes workshops, observations, study and presentation. Through the course, students explore City Music PULSE resources and accompanying technologies with assessments and evaluations.

Participants become site trainers for sustained learning, and learn to apply PULSE as an instructional tool for continued depth and growth.

Themes woven throughout the course include the focus on:

  • cultural contexts and Core Music Standards for education; and
  • youth development: integrating strategies to support social emotional learning (SEL).
