Compositional Techniques for Interactive Media

Course Number
GAIM-341
Description

GAIM-341 Compositional Techniques for Interactive Media serves as the essential bridge between SCRN-240 Introduction to Composition and Orchestration and GAIM-371 Scoring for Interactive Media. This course refines the musical, technical, and storytelling skills required to excel in interactive scoring environments, while preparing students for the demands of professional studio practice.

In the first half of the course, students expand their compositional toolkit by writing for a wide range of video game genres—including heroic, action/adventure, mystery, puzzle/strategy, fantasy, and RPG. Emphasis is placed on developing memorable themes, crafting dynamic orchestrations, producing polished MIDI mockups, and shaping musical narratives that respond to cinematic and interactive contexts.

The second half of the course shifts to professional preparation for recording sessions. Students will learn how to deliver industry-standard Pro Tools sessions, create clear and accurate scores and parts using Dorico, conduct efficiently in the studio, and manage rehearsals under pressure. A mock studio session simulates real-world conditions, providing students with the confidence and discipline needed for advanced coursework and professional careers.
