Advanced Orchestral Mockup Production

Course Number
FILM-465
Description

An advanced elective where students will learn how to create highly realistic orchestral mockups using industry standard sample libraries. Through in-class demonstration, hands-on lab work, and a series of sequencing assignments and projects, the students will develop their skills in producing high-quality orchestral mockups, building on the fundamental orchestral sequencing concepts taught in SCRN-202 and FILM-205.

The assignments and projects will focus on maximizing musical expression and intent through careful control of dynamics, articulation, phrasing, and tempo, as well as developing a solid understanding of common mixing techniques and tools applied to orchestral mockups. Additional topics include an overview of how major sample library developers create sample libraries, an in-depth look at all the major libraries used by top composers in the industry today, template-building and industry standard workflows, and techniques for producing mockups with non-orchestral instruments (“hybrid scoring”).
