Vocal Ensemble With Improvisation 1: R&B

Course Number
ENVC-123
Description

This course is an introductory R&B performance ensemble for voice principals. It is designed to prepare students for solo performance in ensembles and other performing venues within a specific song style. Vocalists will learn microphone technique, song style and groove, skills for communication with the accompanist, and how to count off tempos of songs. Focus will be placed on beginning improvisation skills in the R&B idiom, including melodic and rhythmic phrasing, embellishments, tone color, and hearing basic blues patterns.

Building on skills acquired in ENVC-110 Introduction to Ensembles for the Vocalist or ENVC-111 Rhythm Section Grooves for Vocalists I, students will write basic lead sheets and/or chord charts for use in class.
