Introduction to Ensembles for the Vocalist

Course Number
ENVC-110
Description

This course is for entering voice principals enrolled in PW-110 Music Fundamentals. Beginning with close listening exercises and assignments, students will use their aural skills to explore time-feel, groove, song form, and other fundamental musical elements of a variety of contemporary styles. Students also will explore the typical roles of vocalists and instrumentalists within a contemporary rhythm section, and will study both microphone technique and the basics of the use of sound reinforcement systems. With this knowledge, students will have the opportunity to interact directly with a live rhythm section to develop band communication and leadership skills.

After the midterm, students will apply notation literacy skills to the production of basic lead sheets and chord charts, with the goal of merging aural and written skills to accurately and effectively perform these charts with the live rhythm section.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to act confidently and effectively as ensemble members and leaders as they progress through the core ensemble curriculum.
