Course Number
DANS-212
Description

This course introduces students to the rich and diverse world of Latin Dance through its social dance traditions. Moving beyond ballroom styles, the course focuses on Afro-Latin social dances that have shaped cultural practices across Latin America and the diaspora. Students will explore the historical, social, and cultural contexts of dances such as salsa, bachata, merengue, cumbia, and rumba. Through embodied practice, improvisation, and collaborative exploration, students will gain fluency in these dance forms while learning about their origins, music, and ongoing evolution in contemporary settings. The course also encourages reflection on how these dances function in community-building, identity, and resistance.
