From the late 1800s to today, circus has been a form of popular entertainment that has offered audiences virtuosic performance, spectacle, and delight. This course examines the development of circus arts from ancient spectacle through the European and American traditions of the 18th and 19th century into the contemporary animal-less circus of today.
