Conducting for Dance
Course Number
COND-334
Description
This class is centered around the techniques of conducting instrumental music with dance. Students will have an opportunity to explore the music used in romantic, early 20th century, neoclassical, and contemporary dance repertoire. The emphasis is on developing the capacity to modulate performance in real-time, allowing for input from an extra-musical source, familiarizing oneself with the vocabulary and specific challenges of conducting for dance and learning how to interpret the information the conductor receives from the dancer. Class members play the keyboards, creating an ensemble for a realistic live conducting experience. Basic keyboard skills are sufficient: keyboard as principal instrument is not required.
