Description

This course will analyze and demonstrate the fundamental compositional techniques needed to build a musical theater score. With a compositional craft and theory focus, students will examine the mechanics and techniques of contemporary musical theater scores as well as other compositional art forms, broadening their approach to the theatrical use of music. Elements to be explored include melodic writing, harmonic movement and variety, homophonic and polyphonic vocal arranging, rhythmic phrasing, and the use of alternate meters.
