Advanced Hip-Hop Production
This course offers an in-depth exploration of hip-hop production techniques drawing from over 40 years of hip-hop recordings and production approaches. Students will learn to craft songs using a variety of approaches, with emphasis on project-based assignments that explore the compositional, collaborative, and recording techniques of the genre. Hip-hop production techniques from the early 2000s to the present day will be covered encompassing sub-genres and styles from the east coast, west coast, American south, and midwest.
The course will also cover the legal issues surrounding copyright law and sampling, as the popularity of hip-hop continues to raise concerns about derivative works and potential liabilities for artists, producers, and record labels. Students will explore new musical directions and production techniques as they learn to navigate this complex landscape.
By the end of the course, students will have gained advanced skills in hip-hop production and a deep understanding of the genre's history and evolution. They will be equipped to create innovative and original music that pushes the boundaries of hip-hop production while staying true to its roots.
