Foundations of Music Theory and Performance

Course Number
CMSP-573
Description

This course is designed for students who want to learn the fundamentals of music theory while also developing their skills as part of a rock band. Students will dive into the basics of chords, scales, and rhythm through working with other students as part of a rock band; honing skills in guitar, bass, drums, or vocals.

Through a combination of theory lessons, group exercises, and performance opportunities, students will gain a well-rounded understanding of how music works, and how to apply those principles in a rock band setting. Students will learn how to communicate with other musicians, how to read sheet music and chord charts, and how to improvise and solo. By the end of the course, students will have the skills to confidently play in a rock band, and a solid foundation in music theory.

This course welcomes students without prior knowledge of theory or experience playing an instrument.
