Compositional Techniques for Songwriters

Description

Students enrolled in this course will discuss and develop fundamental compositional techniques needed to build a musical theater score. Through examining various examples in the musical theater canon and beyond, students will explore techniques of contemporary musical theater scores, adding to their toolbox and broadening their approach to the theatrical use of music. Elements to be explored include melodic writing, harmonic movement and variety, vocal polyphony, rhythmic phrasing, and alternate meters.
