Description

This course is a comprehensive study of the evolution of jazz composition and arranging from its roots to the present, and of the cultural and historical context in which they developed. It will include analysis of representative works by Don Redman, Fletcher Henderson, Mary Lou Williams, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Thad Jones, Bill Holman, Gil Evans, Oliver Nelson, Bob Brookmeyer, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Sun Ra, Carla Bley, Maria Schneider, and many others through listening, score study, videos, research, analysis, and discussion.
